How to Choose the Best Argan Oil

1. Virgin versus Refined

Refined argan oil refers to argan oil that has been bleached, and deodorized( (had the natural scent removed by steam processing). Refined argan oils are cheaper and possess no a scent. Which makes it more appealing for cosmetic formulators to mix into their products. Deodorising reduces the skin healing antioxidants by 20% and chemical extraction degrades the oil qualities by more than 60%.

Unrefined Argan oil is normally considered virgin (incorrectly labeled extra virgin in the past) and it possesses a light argan aroma, that will vary from brand to brand.

To conclude, the less processing that is done to our food, the more nutritionally sound and beneficial it is. Therefore, to benefit from the most value, choose an argan oil that is a virgin (unrefined).

2. Processing Methods

Argan oil is most commonly processed using expeller-pressed or cold-pressed methods. Expeller-pressed is a mechanical process that extracts oil from seeds and nuts, at high pressure and heat, and is usually used for refined oils.

Cold-pressed argan oils are expeller-pressed in a heat-controlled environment to keep temperatures below 49ºC or 120ºF degrees. Unfortunately, labeling laws are weak in this area and producers may not be adhering to proper cold-pressed standards. This is where it is helpful to learn more about how the brand in question fully processed its oils.

Therefore, many high-quality companies today are paying attention to using fresh Argan, having a quick turnaround time from picking the Argan to bottling, keeping heat so low that it can be classified as a RAW product, and transparently describing their process. Even though argan oil is one of the few oils that does not get easily destroyed in the presence of heat, the less heat applied to our food and the less harsh the processing, the better for maximum nutritional integrity.

4. Glass Vs Plastic Jars

Plastic is a huge health concern. It leeches into products and exposes our bodies to hormone-disrupting chemicals like bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates. It becomes an even bigger problem when we mix heat and plastic. Seeing that most argan oils are heated and then bottled, we can hopefully appreciate why glass jars are a big incentive.

In conclusion, to pick a high-quality product, focus on argan oil that is a virginorganicprocessed in the least invasive way, and packaged in dark colored glass jars in order to protect it from sunlight to preserve its powerful properties. Focus also on reputable companies who provide fair trade products and accurate, detailed information about their argan oil.

Ultimately, there is no need to nitpick amongst similar quality brands and get overwhelmed by the choices. Find a high-quality argan oil from a company you can trust, feel good about, and is relatively convenient for you to purchase.

Common Argan Oil Questions and Answers

Where should I buy my Argan oil from?

If you’re looking at buying pure argan oil. There are lots of natural health food stores across North America.

My most common recommendations (or personally used online store choices) are listed below. They tend to have a wide variety of options, quick shipping, and low free shipping minimum purchase requirements.

Or you can buy it directly from cooperatives in Morocco.

Can an argan oil quality be determined by the product’s fragrance?

What I have found from my experience is that the highest quality argan oils smell ‘nutty’, which is what most people say.  it can be considered a little too “aromatic”  for those with a strong sense of smell. Be rest assured that the natural scent of quality Argan will disappear once the oil has been absorbed into your skin.

Keep in mind that each person’s sense of smell and taste varies, so it is not always a good indicator to go by what a particular oil smelled or tasted like to someone else, but valuable to be aware of nonetheless.

Can I mix Argan Oil with other ingredients?

Yes, you can, however, if you decide to mix Argan Oil with other products you may find that the absorption rate is reduced and this will alter the moisturizing and healing effects the oil is known for.

Can I use Argan Oil on Oily Skin?

Yes. Argan oil is non-comedogenic oil which means it will not clog your pores; the oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, therefore Argan Oil has a very high absorption rate.

Can I use Argan oil while pregnant or nursing?

Using Argan oil during pregnancy for stretch marks is completely safe for both the mother and the baby.

Is pure argan oil edible?

There are 2 kinds of Argan oil:

– The cosmetic one which is used for beauty & cosmetic purposes only.

– The culinary Argan oil which is used for both, culinary as well as beauty purposes!
